NetWork News

As Chair of the Council of NetWorks, I wanted to personally encourage you to consider running for a leadership position on one of the NetWork Steering Committees. Nominations for NetWork Steering Committees are currently being collected. You can enter your name here if you are interested and you’ll be contacted with more information!

In June, each NetWork Steering Committee will vote on the new members, and you will be notified of the results in August. Please note that it is not unusual for it to take more than one election cycle to get voted onto a steering committee. If it does not work out this year, or if you were unsuccessful last year, do not be discouraged and try again!

Here is additional information on what we do and what you can expect. From personal experience, I will tell you that what you get out of the experience far exceeds what you put into it.

What are NetWork Steering Committees?

NetWork Steering Committees serve as the governing body of respective NetWorks and are supported by a CHEST staff liaison. These groups provide a structure for CHEST members to actively participate in the achievement of the strategic goals of CHEST; offer a forum for members with similar interests to network; and create opportunities for collaboration in education, leadership, research, and advocacy activities. NetWork Steering Committees play an integral part in the CHEST Annual Meeting with NetWork sessions making up more than 50% of those on the program. Committee members serve as subject matter experts for CHEST, reviewing and commenting on relevant topics. These groups also take on other projects, such as producing educational content for patients and clinicians.

By getting involved, you can have a more direct impact on the activities of your NetWork, as well as having even more opportunities to network and collaborate with other experts in your field. This is also an excellent way to get involved in the leadership of CHEST, as many past steering committee members have moved on to further leadership positions.

What are their responsibilities?

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Attending quarterly conference calls
  • Submitting/grading sessions and grading/moderating abstracts for the CHEST Annual Meeting
  • Attending the NetWork Open Forum and NetWorks Mixer at the CHEST Annual Meeting
  • Being an active contributor to various NetWork activities

Am I the right person?

Whether you are a physician, clinician, educator, or researcher; at an academic location or in a private practice; a nurse, respiratory therapist, advanced practice provider, or fellow, you can play an important role in the NetWorks. The most important characteristic you can bring is your motivation to contribute. We strongly believe that the NetWork leadership functions at its best when it represents the membership and your involvement is important to do so.
