Greetings from the Airways Disorders NetWork! I hope everyone is enjoying their summer and staying safe. Our NetWork has been busy: We published two articles in the CHEST Physician® publication, one reviewing the newasthma treatment guidelinesand a second oneosinophils as a biomarker in COPD. We posted blog articles onasthma and COVID-19, as well as onCOPD and COVID-19. Additionally, our steering committee members have entered several proposals to be considered for CHEST guidelines.
Our NetWork is looking forward to reconnecting at CHEST 2021, October 17-20. First, I would like to invite everyone to the NetWork Featured Lecture on treatable asthma traits in pregnancy with Vanessa Murphy, PhD; Dharani Narendra, MBBS, FCCP; and Navitha Ramesh, MD, MBBS, FCCP, via Zoom on Friday, October 8. We have the honor of having Vanessa Murphy, PhD, who has been studying this topic for more than 20 years as the featured speaker. This lecture is open to all and free to attend, so please join us.
We have two NetWork Highlights that will be presented during CHEST 2021, “Understanding Non-Th2 Asthma: From Novel Biologic Mechanisms to New Therapeutic Options,” and “Culturally Competent Interdisciplinary Asthma Management.” We are also expecting an interesting Airways Disorders NetWork Bite Presentation by NetWork member, Sarang Patil, MD, on "Management of COVID Cases With Limited Resources in India." This lecture will be recorded and uploaded to the CHEST website after the meeting.
Finally, I want to wish a warm send-off and a huge thanks to our “retiring” steering committee members, Mahesh Padukudru Anand, DNB, MBBS, FCCP, and Aaron Holley, MD, FCCP. Please take a look at their impressive bios and be inspired!

Mahesh Padukudru Anand, DNB, MBBS, FCCP
Dr. Mahesh Padukudru Anand is a Professor and former Head of the Department ofRespiratory Medicine at JSS Medical College, JSS AHER, Mysuru, India. He is passionate about patient care, medical education, and mentorship. Since 2017, he has been an active steering committee member, participating in activities including reviewing abstracts, moderating sessions, and writing CHEST Physician articles and perspectives on literature. Dr. Padukudru Anand’s clinical and research interests include airway diseases, indoor and outdoor air pollution, and allergy.
Dr. Padukudru Anand is also actively engaged with a number of other global chest organizations and projects. Notable among these is his work as a fellow for the DBT/Wellcome Trust India Alliance, coordinating research on the impact of air pollution on lung development in children across four cities in India, and as a committee member for the Indian Guidelines for Diagnosis of Respiratory Allergy.
Aaron Holley, MD, FCCP
Dr. Aaron Holley is the Director for the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He is also an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University. As a US Army physician, his primary focus is caring for activity duty service members, optimizing their performance and keeping them healthy. Subtle changes to the airways are often responsible when they experience respiratory limitations. Supporting service members generated his interest in exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, small airways disease, and exercise physiology.
Since 2013, he has participated in research investigating the respiratory effects from deployment to Southwest Asia. The research assesses airway changes at the population level and fully characterizes the contributors to exercise limitations in those who return with dyspnea on exertion.
Being a member of the CHEST Airways Disorders NetWork has allowed him to interact with experts with similar clinical and research interests. These interactions have increased his knowledge and led directly to improvements at the bedside.
