I cannot tell you how happy I am to be able to attend in-person learning and meetings once again. CHEST 2021 will be held in Orlando, Florida, October 17-20, and online for those unable to attend in person. I sincerely hope that many of our NetWork members will be able to come to Orlando. It has been a long time since we’ve been able to see each other’s faces and share stories. Consider applying to the CHEST 2021 Call for Abstract and Case Report Moderators by Monday, August 2, for the chance to moderate sessions; facilitate discussions, questions, and answers; and select award winners.
You’re also invited to take advantage of CHEST’s exclusive, free Leadership Development course held at CHEST 2021 in Orlando, Florida, on Saturday, October 16. It includes professional skills often overlooked in medical training, such as clinical practice navigation, research, and administrative roles. Save your seat for the course, and RSVP by Friday, July 23.
In-person simulation courses are once again being offered at CHEST Global Headquarters in Glenview, Illinois, and there will also be simulation opportunities at the annual meeting. Take a look at the many simulation offerings available at CHEST Global Headquarters and consider attending!
NetWork business meetings and featured lectures will be virtual this year and will take place BEFORE the annual meeting. Our Cardiovascular Medicine and Surgery NetWork Zoom meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 5, 2-3 pm CT. Mark your calendars and plan on participating.

Get to know your leadership: Hugh Cassiere, MD, FCCP
I am a triple board-certified internist, pulmonologist, and critical care physician practicing as the Chief Cardiac Intensivist at the Sandra Atlas Bass Heart Hospital on Long Island, New York, which is part of Northwell Health. I am also the Director for Critical Care Services.
My entire 24-year professional career has focused on the care of the medical and surgical cardiovascular intensive care unit patient. In this environment, I have the great fortune of working side by side with outstanding cardiac anesthesiologists, cardiovascular and thoracic surgeons, interventional cardiologists, heart failure and transplant cardiologists, and other specialists who care for complex, critically ill patients. My unique background and clinical experience are highlighted by my involvement with the FDA's Anesthesiology and Respiratory Therapy Devices Panel over the past 14 years and periodically interacting with two other FDA medical device panels on Clinical Chemistry and Clinical Toxicology Devices and Circulatory System Devices.
I completed medical school at Stony Brook School of Medicine on Long Island, New York, and did both my internal medicine residency and pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine fellowship at Winthrop University Hospital on Long Island, New York. I am currently an Associate Professor of Medicine of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. I was introduced to CHEST as a fellow and have been an active member on various committees ever since. I am currently an active member of the Cardiovascular Medicine and Surgery NetWork, which has been one of the highlights of my CHEST experiences. As the field of advanced cardiopulmonary support evolves, I look forward to contributing to the ongoing mission of CHEST and to advancing the science and clinical understanding of cardiac critical care medicine and my personal mission of saving one life at a time.
