Get to know your steering committee:
Won Lee, MD, FCCP
Won Lee, MD, is an Associate Professor at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, and he serves as Medical Director of the Clinical Center for Sleep and Breathing Disorders—a multidisciplinary site that cares for a wide spectrum of adult patients with chronic respiratory failure, home mechanical ventilation, and primary sleep disorders.
Reflecting on his tenure on the steering committee, Dr. Lee recalls, “I started seeing patients with neuromuscular disorders and respiratory impairment about 10 years ago, when there were limited clinical sites with areas of expertise. Now, serving on this committee, I am so grateful to share common experiences with colleagues in pediatric and adult medicine from all over the United States and Canada. It’s a marvelous opportunity to collaborate with centers with similar patient populations.”
Dr. Lee also serves in educational leadership roles for the School of Medicine, along with both pulmonary and sleep medicine fellowships. He notes, "It's a true honor to serve patients with complex respiratory physiology, and to provide both care and education to patients and to our house staff and medical students. It takes a team approach, with respiratory therapists, advanced practice providers, sleep technologists, clinical staff and administration, and collaborating physicians in the clinic and hospital, to offer compassionate and exceptional care. I am truly privileged to do what I do and greatly enjoy serving on this committee."
Justin Fiala, MD
Justin Fiala, MD, is an Assistant Professor dually appointed at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University and the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab in Chicago, Illinois. He completed his residency training in internal medicine, including an additional year as Chief Medical Resident at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and he went on to complete fellowships in pulmonary and critical care and sleep medicine at Northwestern. His clinical interests include diseases of ventilatory control and chronic respiratory failure. Dr. Fiala is also passionate about health equity and spends his free time providing pro bono sleep-related evaluation and treatment for uninsured patients across Chicago.
