Sleep Medicine NetWork News

Note from the NetWork Chair

Sleep Med_Headshot_Sunita Kumar_051721

CHEST 2021 is just around the corner! Our NetWork has a comprehensive list of sessions covering a wide spectrum of topics in sleep medicine. Like last year, the conference is virtual, with sessions livestreamed and on demand. Please check out the schedule for details.

Please register to join us for the NetWork Featured Lecture and Open Forum on Wednesday, October 6, from 2-3 pm CT. This year’s featured speaker is Dr. Cyrus Kholdani from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, who will present on Pulmonary Hypertension in the Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome: A Case Based Review. During the open forum following the lecture, we would like to hear from our membership on session ideas for CHEST 2022.

The recall of PAP and home ventilators by Philips early this summer increased the workload for many of us, with increased volumes of phone and e-messages from worried patients trying to make sense of the recall announcement. Many of us had to add “PAP recall clinics” to help our patients navigate their options. It is reassuring to know that Philips has started the replacement process, as I have heard from some patients who received their units in the mail.

Check out the new CHEST website and the Sleep Medicine NetWork page to see the latest infographics on pediatric sleep, the Philips PAP recall, and facts and myths about fatigue and sleepiness in residency.

600X90 NEWSBRIEF networks 2020 Sleep

Get to know your leadership: Saiprakash B. Venkateshiah, MD, FCCP

Sleep Med_Headshot_Saiprakash B. Venkateshiah_092821I am an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia. I am a clinician educator and a “general pulmonologist” practicing the entire gamut of pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine. I have been a CHEST member for close to 2 decades. My involvement with the CHEST NetWork leadership started in 2012 as a steering committee member of the Clinical Pulmonary Medicine NetWork, and I later transitioned to Vice-Chair and Chair of the NetWork. I was also a member of the Executive Committee of the Council of NetWorks and the Scientific Program Committee for CHEST 2019 and CHEST 2020. I am involved in educational committees of CHEST and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

I joined the steering committee of the Sleep Medicine NetWork in 2019. As a Sleep Medicine NetWork member, I enjoy collaborating with a diverse group of professionals in various stages of their careers who passionately strive to promote awareness of issues relevant to sleep medicine. It is very gratifying for me to participate in the Sleep Medicine NetWork by submitting content for the CHEST Annual Meetings and preparing sleep education material for the providers and public. The Sleep Medicine NetWork, with its myriad activities, has helped me grow as a clinician. I encourage CHEST members, regardless of the stages of their careers, to join the Sleep Medicine NetWork to advance their personal and professional growth. Please visit our page and get introduced to a wealth of practical, clinically relevant, educational material on sleep medicine.

Thank You,
Saiprakash B. Venkateshiah, MD, FCCP
