By this time in 2021, I had hoped we would not still be experiencing a COVID-19 surge throughout the country. As you know, CHEST 2021 will be held as a virtual meeting from October 17-20. While we can’t meet in person, I look forward to seeing you online during the meeting. Our NetWork has several sessions related to women’s lung health at CHEST 2021. In addition, our members have contributed relevant sex and gender content to several other CHEST sessions, including a game, Jeopardy, which is currently in production.
Members of the Women’s Lung Health NetWork have been working with the Education Committee from the CHEST Foundation to update the patient information website to include important information related to sex and gender in pulmonary disease. The asthma page now has information about disease differences between women and men, and content for sex and gender differences in COPD will be published soon. We hope these patient information pages highlighting sex and gender differences in lung disease will increase awareness about this important topic.
Join us for our NetWork’s Featured Lecture & Open Forum with speaker Shannon Kay, MD, recipient of a CHEST Foundation Research Grant in Women’s Lung Health, for her work on sex-specific gene expression in asthma. During her presentation, Dr. Kay will provide an update on her research project.

Get to know your leadership: Anita Rajagopal, MD, FCCP
Dr. Anita Rajagopal, MD, FCCP, joined CHEST as a medical resident and is currently serving her second term as a member of the Women’s Lung Health NetWork Steering Committee.
Her early introduction to CHEST occurred when she would tag along with her father to annual ACCP/CHEST meetings. She went on to join CHEST as a resident trainee member and presented unique case reports and research during the poster sessions. As a pulmonary and critical care fellow, she continued to present in poster sessions, started submitting sessions for the CHEST Annual Meeting, and served as the chair for multiple sessions. As her desire to be involved in CHEST grew, she became a part of the first physician-in-training class to serve as a member of the Interventional Chest/Diagnostic Procedures NetWork Steering Committee, where she served two terms. She has also been honored as a CHEST Foundation Travel Grant recipient.
Dr. Rajagopal is an active participant at the CHEST Annual Meeting as a speaker, submitting proposals for sessions, reviewing submissions, volunteering to moderate sessions. She has a special focus on sleep medicine, women’s health, and empowering women in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine. She was a proud recipient of the Distinguished CHEST Educator Award. In addition, Dr. Rajagopal serves on the Women & Pulmonary Work Group for the CHEST Foundation. She believes in the power of mentorship and sponsorship for pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine colleagues and encourages women to get involved in CHEST.
Outside of CHEST, Dr. Rajagopal also spearheads efforts by developing educational materials and giving talks to promote women’s health.
